Police release statement as The Voice US contestant killed in Florida
CELEBRITY tributes have been shared for singer Christina Grimmie, who was shot dead in the United States while signing autographs for fans.
The 22 year old was killed on Friday by an unnamed man in Orlando, Florida, reports The Daily Star.
While Christina's brother Mark reportedly tackled the assailant, the former contestant on The Voice US suffered fatal injuries and later died in hospital.
"With deep regret, we have confirmed Christina Grimmie, @TheRealGrimmie has died from her injuries," the Orlando Police Department wrote on its Twitter account.
Police spokeswoman Wanda Miglio told reporters at a news conference the motive of the man – who later took his own life — remains unknown.
"We don't know if he was just a crazy fan that followed her on Twitter or on social media. We really don't know," he said.
"This is a very tragic event. This should have been something that was fun and exciting, and for something like this to happen is just a tragedy."
Celebrity tributes have been shared across social media for Christina, who was mentored by Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine.
"There are no words. We lost a beautiful soul with an amazing voice. Our hearts go out to the friends, fans and family of @TheRealGrimmie," a spokesperson from The Voice wrote on Twitter.
Singer Demi Lovato wrote: "What the f*** is wrong with people, #RIPChristina my thoughts and prayers are with her loved ones."
Photograph singer Ed Sheeran wrote: "You will never be forgotten… #RIPChristina."
Nick Jonas tweeted: "My heart hurts hearing this news.. So terrible. Praying for Christina and her family", and he later shared a picture of him and Christina with the caption "RIPChristina".
